The Twixy Tootle Too line initiated when I was studying abroad in Provence. I made line of headbands that were comprised of little odds and ends I picked up during my travels such as ticket stubs, food wrappers, ribbons, etc. These headbands are a continuation of that idea. Each headband is unique and is displayed on my newly invented Lamp Ladies.

ladylike fan

Last week, Amy at shopSCAD, contacted me and asked me to create a "ladylike fan" for a guest of Paula Wallace. The idea came to me within a minute of her contacting me. I am home in Wisconsin right now and the prairie on our property is FILLED with wildflowers. I looked out the window and immediately knew that I wanted the fan to resemble a Queen Anne's Lace flower. This is my artist statement.

I have had the AMAZING opportunity to act as concept illustrator, art director, costume and prop creator and stylist for a collaborative photo shoot with a good friend of mine. It has been a lot of work but wonderful work. The theme of this shoot was about growing up and the feelings we all had during that awkward stage in our lives.

My artist statement goes like this:

She is uncertain yet she is expectant. She is an explorer but she trips along the way.
Her soul is layered, deeply layered, searching.
Although they feel unnatural, her circumstances are universal.

She is growing up.

We are currently working on our second photo shoot.

i have been working on the illustration side of my portfolio lately. i spent the weekend brushing up on my photoshop skills (a.k.a reading online tutorials). Pie Girl was a lesson in channels and Hiker was made while learning how to use layer masks. i don't quite know what i am doing but i figured as long as i continue to create, things will work themselves out......

this set of patterns was done for a pattern design competion. the competition is sponsered by surtex which is a pattern design trade show in new york that happens in conjunction with the stationary show and the international contempory fine furniture fair every spring. the theme we had to design for was "movement". my intention was to mark the path of performers and attendees by illustrating their individual static postions. i focused on that on some patterns more than others. the circus used to be a huge deal and the entire town would shut down the day the circus was unloaded. i applied my patterns to party goods hoping to bring that same celebration back. i was careful in choosing colors that would relate well to birthday or an anytime celebration but at the same time i utilized various shades of green and red to make it appropriate for christmas as well.

i wrapped presents in white paper with white ribbon and then set up a mini birthday party in a tiny corner of my disastrous-middle-of-finals house. My gracious and gorgeous friends took time to come over to enjoy a fictitious celebration of cold green tea and gross grocery store cupcakes. (i literally had to peel off the neon colored frosting and redecorate them myself...yuck.)

ode to margaret kilgallen

if you don't know who she is, you should. margaret kilgallen is so great. during the day she worked as a book conservator at the library and would come across certain woman that were lost in history. regular women. when she wasn't working she would expose these forgotten women by means of mural painting or graffiti. her style was inspired by folk art and the hand quality of painting was very important to her. well anyways i love her and you should too. this collection was inspired by her and her love of folk art. i started my collection with a map of the road that i grew up on in rural wisconsin. it is a really pretty road only traveled on by the people that live on it so i decided to expose it to the world. but it turned out really ugly so i am only showing the coordinates. i wanted to make a collection that was a bit more "mature" and would appeal to a company like Anthropologie.

this is the first collection i created. i was instructed to design a set of fashion prints that were inspired by the 60s'. of course it evolved into children's fashions and specifically for raingear such as umbrellas, boots, raincoats, and coat linings etc.

the next few posts all involve the patterns i created for my CAD surface design class this fall. this first one was designed specifically for wallpaper and sort of maps out my normal path home in savannah. i illustrated specific landmarks that have meaning to me. the colorway shown here makes it suitable for a girls bedroom.

the unnamed dolls

i need your help! i have been putting off the doll naming process but the time has come! i need to name them NOW! if something brilliant comes to mind when you see the pictures please let me know. i will give you a little background on them and maybe that will spark something...
1. these dolls are custom made for certain people that are also my best friends.
2. there is a doll on both sides. one side is me and one side is my friend.
3. they are pretty quirky and extra squishy.
4. if i were to ever market them, the customer would send me a picture and i would custom make them. i want the name to emphasize the weirdness because i am trying to make that point clear to people who are expecting a realistic portrait.

a little side project...i recently obtained lots of wundebar vintage paper doll clothes and i decided to put heads on them. i am researching the surface onto which i put the little people. it needs to be something suitable for writing yet rigid enough for hanging and inexpensive enough to make profit if i sell them. all i have come up with is paper adhered to chipboard. any suggestions??

a simple scene from snow white. i am planning on writing and illustrating a children's book this winter. the writing part doesn't come as easily as the illustrating part so while I wait for my writer's block to go away, i decided to experiment with my technique.

my fibers class went on a little woodland walk and we were instructed to make some sort of costume or functional gear, etc. for our journey. i decided to go the "frolicking in the old fashioned woods" route. erwin was my little doll (among other things) that i brought with me on the adventure. his posture seems to be getting worse and worse every day....

wooly wonders

i created this small installation after a trip to new york. cities are hard places to be. they are places entirely created by humans for humans. i think that is one reason why people can get so depressed there. we were not created to be completely seperated from nature! i decided to create these little woolen flowers that would creep out of sidewalk cracks in the middle of urban settings. they would be placed spuratically around the city to give people some hope. they can also be picked and put in a a vase. the best part is that you don't ever have to water them!
